Stands about 75 cm or 30-34 inches tall and weighs about 5 kilograms, the flightless Great Auk is the largest of the auks. It has white, glossy black feathers.

In the past, the Great Auk found in a large number of islands off eastern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Ireland and the UK, but it was eventually hunted to extinction. Shell midden sites found Floridan show that at least occasionally, birds such as the recent winter adventure in the far south of the 14th century.
